Child Sexual Abuse Material on a Pornography Site
Often referred to as “child pornography” for legal reasons, child sexual abuse material (CSAM) are images and videos of children being depicted in sexually explicit ways. Importantly, not all child sexual abuse images require a child to be “abused,” if one defines “abuse” as “sexual assault.” Child sexual abuse images are being shared across the Internet at a gut wrenching rate—over 45 million online photos and videos were reported to tech companies in 2018 alone. Tragically, this material isn’t confined to the dark web. Child sexual abuse images appears on “tube porn” sites with increasing regularity. Victims need significant help to get it removed and find justice. Porn websites should be held accountable for the CSAI material they distribute through poor policies.
Material with Sex Trafficking Victim on a Pornography Site
The pornography industry is inextricably intertwined with sex trafficking. For instance, dozens (and possibly hundreds) of sexually trafficked young women were used in the production of pornography by a group of exploiters operating as “GirlsDoPorn.” In other cases, videos of sex trafficked minors have been hosted on “tube porn” sites. Additionally, sex traffickers may provide sexual access to victims via subscription websites. Individuals in these (or other circumstances) may have a case to bring against the billion dollar pornography industry for complicity in their abuse and exploitation.
Rape/Sexual Assault Material on a Pornography Site
Time and time again, victims of rape and sexual assault have been unable to escape the trauma of their abuse because the perpetrator(s) uploaded images and video of their abuse to pornography websites. Worse yet, many pornography websites refuse to remove the material even upon repeated request. They must and can be held accountable.
Nonconsensually Shared Material on a Pornography Site
“Nonconsensually-shared sexually explicit images or videos” or “image-based sexual abuse” is often referred to colloquially as “revenge pornography.” However, this phrase doesn’t adequately represent the myriad ways and motivations for the nonconsenual distribution of such material. For instance, while this type of material is sometimes distributed by an ex romantic partner with vengeful purposes in mind, other times it may be carried out by hackers who break into electronic devices to steal sexually explicit personal photos. Any way that it occurs, it’s abuse.

Sex traffickers have capitalized on the hospitality industry’s refusal to adopt and implement industry-wide standards and anti-trafficking policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, training hotel staff on how to identify obvious and well-known signs of sex trafficking. Victim-survivors deserve justice.

A classified advertising website known as “the hub” for prostitution advertising— Backpage.com—served as a virtual auction block where sex buyers would shop for human beings for sex from the privacy of their home, office, hotel room, or cell phone. Many of those bought and sold via the website were sexually trafficked women and children. Backpage.com has been shut down and its executives are facing justice in court. We know other tech companies are similarly complicit in sexual exploitation and need to be held accountable.
